International Student Resources

Students from all over the world come to GW to study for their MS in Applied Economics. We offer many resources and support networks, both within the department and through the broader university, to help our international students succeed. 

All new international students attend an orientation session organized by the GW International Services Office during the first few days of the semester. This session allows you to meet other international students and learn about the resources available to you.

International Student Application Requirements

International applicants should view the dedicated international admisstions webpage to obtain details regarding application requirements. The International Services Office is the starting point for all questions regarding your application and visa and English-language proficiency requirements.

University Resources for International Students

• Career Services
  International students on an F-1 visa may work a maximum of 20 hours a week for on-campus employment, including as a research assistant, in the bookstore or in administrative offices. 
• Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
  CPT is a form of employment authorization that offers F-1 visa students an opportunity to apply academic study to a structured work training experience before completing their degree. Note that you must have received written approval on your I-20 from an ISO advisor before applying for CPT.
• English for Academic Purposes Program
  This program helps international students who speak English as a second language socialize at GW and develop needed professional skills. Grades from EAP do not count toward GPA calculations.
• GW SAGE Resources for International Students
  The Student Association for Graduate Economics (SAGE) has a wealth of information for international students in economics.
• International Graduate Funding Initiative
  Students coming to GW from certain countries may receive a tuition award of up to $10,000 per academic year.
• International Services Office
  The primary hub for international student support, the office can help with visa and immigration problems, orientation activities, English immersion groups, guides for getting around D.C. and more.
• Optional Practical Training (OPT)
  The OPT program provides international students with professional experience directly related to their field of study. Students may qualify for up to 36 months of OPT after receiving their Master’s degree. 
• Updating Your Address (GW International Services Office)
  Required action within 10 days of arriving in the United States on an F-1 or J-1 visa.
